Acne or medically known as Acne Vulgaris is a skin condition that affects people of all ages. But ever wonder what's happening beneath your skin and how acne forms?

Our skin's system is amazing! Our skin cells are regularly renewing, this is a good thing since we are welcomed with a fresh, new skin. However, a healthy follicle may sometimes be clogged when dead skin cells are mixed with oil or sebum - the two main ingredients for acne!

Sebum starts to accumulate and increase and we have our androgen hormones to thank for this (*roll eyes), factors like stress and puberty may increase androgen level leading to excess oil production and eventually may clog the pores or hair follicle.

Bacteria that are naturally present on our skin as well as in our clogged pores now has a good amount of food supply (the oil and dead skin cells) thus starts to breed and grow inside the clogged pore - yuck, we know!

One way our body responds to this bacteria is by releasing white blood cells that help fight the bacteria below the surface of the skin. When the white blood cells die, they combine with the dead skin and oil or sebum and it creates a pus-filled pimple.

Some Causes of Acne:

Hormones and stress plays a big part

Hormonal changes such as a woman's menstrual cycle or an increase in Androgens due to emotional stress resulting in an increase in sebum may cause or aggravate acne.

Double check the products you're using

Some face products or makeup can clog your pores and lead to acne breakout, especially if you're more acne prone. Check the labels and go for products that are noncomedogenic. These are products that were formulated not to clog pores.

Don't overdo the cleansing and spot treatments

Excessive washing, harsh scrubs or facial wash and overdoing spot treatments may strip your skin's natural oils and dry out your skin, which can then cause your skin to produce more oil and possibly, blemishes. Try a mild cleanser like the Banish Starter Cleanser or spot treat your acne with a mild, natural formula like the Banish Pumpkin Mask!

 Stop picking your pimples

We might have heard this numerous times already, and for a good reason! Not only will it cause acne scars, it increases the chances of spreading the bacteria from within. When we pick on our acne, there's a possibility of pushing the bacteria deeper or spreading it around causing more future acne - no thanks!
