What to do on the First Sign of Acne March 11 2017, 0 Comments

The morning you wake up and look into the mirror and you see a red inflamed monster on your face.  All of a sudden, you feel as if your day has been turned around and the rest of your day will be full of bad luck just because a zit poked its head out.  Then, you spend ten minutes poking it, and you use ten pounds of concealer to hide it.  Sometimes they really hurt deep under the skin and stay there for days, maybe even weeks.  However don’t fret, there is a way to speed up healing and get rid of the little sucker.

At night, cleanse the area with a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil, or Paula’s Choice Clear Cleanser, to get rid of surface oils and any makeup. Next, take some ice and wrap in a clean towel and ice the area for 10 minutes to reduce inflammation.  After icing it, the bump should have gone down,  and the next step is to take a pea size of 2.5% benzoyl peroxide and gently rub it on the affected area. Rub gently for 2 minutes and let the rest absorb to reduce irritation. Don’t touch that area for 5-10 minutes to let the benzoyl peroxide properly disinfect the area. The last step is to coat the area in Vaseline to promote healing and prevent moisture from escaping. Contrary to some beliefs, petroleum jelly does not clog pores and you can’t dry out your pimples.

For your white blood cells to properly fight infection and prevent a bad scab, moisture is needed for the area. Vaseline has no added ingredients, reduces irritation, and provides sufficient hydration. In the morning, apply a dot of hydrocortisone cream to further reduce inflammation which will also reduce future scarring.  Repeat this for several days and monitor the area.

The benzoyl peroxide will provide an oxygen rich environment killing the P. acnes bacteria.  The Vaseline will provide moisture without irritating ingredients and the hydrocortisone will bring down swelling. Remember throughout the day to get enough hydration and always maintain a healthy diet which will speed up your body’s healing process.  Sleep is also important to heal your body.  While you wait for a pimple to go, a dab of good spot concealer over foundation will hide the redness.  Do not cake your foundation to hide a tiny zit, it will make the situation worse.  However, a light dusting of translucent powder is okay.
