With 2017 coming to an end, there’s no better time to reflect on the past year and all of the crazy skincare trends that came along with it. Some good, some bad, and some just out right wrong. It has been the year of simplicity when it comes to your beauty routine and all about putting your skin health first. Some trends died down by the middle of the year while others prevailed. Now, let’s look back on some of the great, crazy, awesome acne trends of 2017.
deep hydration sheet masks
Sheet masks started off with a bang this year and haven’t died down since. Looking like a “cute” masked Michael Myers while pampering yourself and getting deep hydration? Nothing could possibly sound better. From brands like who sell whole food sheet masks like pumpkin and red wine for a smashing $4 to designer skin brands like who charge $135 for a box of masks, the options are endless. The main benefits you can expect to see after using a sheet mask are smoothness, suppleness, increased hydration, and even skin tone.
probiotics for skin and body health
We’ve known about the gut-acne connection for a while, but just this year the information exploded and went mainstream. Recognizing your body as a whole and making the connection between internal and external health has played a key role in the rising of probiotics in the beauty industry. Good and bad bacteria both live in the gut, and when this delicate balance is off bad bacteria can take over causing your immune system to go haywire showing in ways like tiredness, inflammation, and acne. Probiotics put the good bacteria back in the gut, helping to restore the balance and heal your skin from the inside out. Taking a daily probiotic can improve your immune system, heal IBS, and work to prevent eczema and acne.
multi-masking to address different skin concerns
For all of you out there who have combination skin or just want to maximize the benefits of your skincare routine, multi-masking has got your back. Multi-masking is when you use multiple masks simultaneously to target different skin concerns. Got dry skin on your forehead but oily clogged pores on your cheeks? No problem, just use a super charged acne fighting mask (like activated charcoal or benotite clay) on your cheeks and a deeply hydrating mask on your forehead. Creating your own mixture makes it super easy to treat flare ups and combination skin, plus you’ll have a reason to keep more than one mask in your bathroom cupboard.
skin supplements for a glow from within
More effective then biotin, collagen, and keratin; the new skin supplements hitting the shelves are loaded with essential vitamins and minerals to give you an other worldly glow. Ingestible beauty supplements heal from within in several different ways such as supplementing in areas where one may be deficient, lowering inflammation levels, increasing collagen production, and even slowing down the production of sebum- all leading to clear, radiant skin. Some of the most popular beauty supplements that took the shelves by storm this year, leaving both glowing skin and reviews, are , , and .
ditching the chemical packed products
Natural ingredients have always been a crowd pleaser but this year the simplification of skincare took extra importance with chemical packed products getting pushed to the back burner. We began seeing more products marketed as “free from”, “only X ingredients”, and “contains natural ingredients”. There became a lot of information circulating on how natural skincare ingredients are cleaner and we should be aware of removing any nasty ingredients that may be toxic to our health, disrupt our hormones, or that cause skin irritation.
Starting with raw ingredients and experimenting with whole food DIYS became a huge trend in the Instagram beauty guru community and we began seeing more companies minimizing their ingredient lists . Some of the most popular ingredients used for acne this year are activated charcoal, benotite clay, turmeric, avocado, honey, garlic, and oats.
at home professional treatments and devices
Why go get a facial when you can do it yourself in the comfort of your own home? This year that same mentality was applied to micro-needling, microdermabrasion, light therapy, extractions, and more! Each month it seemed a new device was sweeping the market, with most being gimmicks or company sponsored posts, it became difficult for us to decipher which were actually valuable for our skin health.
Some of the best at home treatments for acne scars have proven time and time again to be micro-needling and at home microdermabrasion. For these treatments I recommend the or the to reveal supple, even skin tone and texture. As far as acne goes, the is a real bang for your buck- receiving 30 at home acne busting treatments for $40, that’s a little over a dollar a treatment!
