Merry Thriftmas December 15 2016, 0 Comments
If you are like me, you often struggle to find nice gifts to give your friends and family for holidays or birthdays. This can be especially difficult when you are a broke college student with $6.81 in your bank account. The “broke college student” has become a funny stereotype, but let me assure you that it is absolutely true, as I’m sure some of you know. Even if you are not in college and you are looking to save money on gifts, this can be a great option. Just as many families in this economy are struggling to afford non-essential things and even struggling with affording the necessities, my family endured a pretty tough year financially. Because of this, we decided to have a “Thriftmas.” All of our gifts either had to be from the thrift store or they had to be homemade. We honestly had so much fun with this that we decided to do it again next year even if we were in a better financial situation.
I am an avid thrift shopper so I was well prepared for finding gifts for my friends and family. I am lucky to live near two awesome thrift shops with a good variety of just about everything you could ever need. I found two books for my family called “The Bartenders Guide” which have the recipe to every drink you can think of. I found a glass chess game for my brother which came with shot glasses as the pieces, which was a big hit. (We’re not alcoholics I promise). I got a polaroid camera for my mom who loves taking pictures, some scarves for my grandmother and friends, and also a bracelet made of nickels welded together. How cool is that!? Altogether I spend about $25.00 on Christmas gifts.
I also decided that I would make a gift for everybody. After sifting through different ideas of what I could make, I landed on a sugar hand scrub. These are SO easy and cheap to make. This is the recipe that I used.
~ ⅔ cup of sugar
~ ¼ cup coconut oil or olive oil (melt the coconut oil in the microwave)
~ approx. 15 drops of whatever type of essential oil you prefer (I used peppermint)
Just mix these ingredients together, place it into a mason jar, and wrap a ribbon around it. So simple and a great gift for anyone.
Gift giving doesn’t have to be stressful and expensive. This holiday was so much fun for my whole family and we all agreed that it was the best Christmas that we have had together.
