Hyper-pigmentation or general redness is something many people suffer from, especially me. Listed below are some of my helpful tips on how to treat hyperpigmentation from acne.

DISCLAIMER: Although I don't have redness, my skin is very sensitive to the red scarring acne leaves behind. For years I battled being very self-conscious and ashamed of my skin, but hey, it's not my fault my skin is prone to scarring right? So please, do not take this post as a way of shaming this condition. These are just products that have either reduced my scarring or helped me hide them significantly under makeup. Although this took me years of strength to live by, remember that your skin's condition does not define you. You are absolutely beautiful just the way you are, scarring, acne, and redness eventually fade but the emotional damage does not. 

Love the skin you're in, it's the only one you got!

Now onto the products. Obviously, these two conditions are skin deep, so let's begin our journey within the body.

1. WATER

First and foremost, water. Water is an amazing way to flush your skin out and keep it hydrated, which is a huge aid on how to treat hyperpigmentation from acne. So drink up those 8 glasses a day!

2. SUNSCREEN

Existing hyperpigmentation and redness will only get worse if you don't protect it from harsh sun rays. A sunscreen is an essential part of your everyday skincare routine, as it won't allow for your redness to get darker while you're out in the sun. A common misconception about sunscreen is that you only need to wear it in the summer, which is totally false! The sun's rays are even harsh on your skin in the dead of winter, so please do your skin a favor and always lather it up.

The next two products are a high end and a drugstore option to do the same job, exfoliating. Regardless of whether your skin resembles the Sahara Dessert or an oil-slicked pan, you need to exfoliate. Not only will you be removing dead skin cells and making your skin smoother, you're slowly buffing away the redness. Allowing your complexion to generate new skin cells will let your skin slowly diminish any existing marks on it. I recommend exfoliating 2-3 times a week.

3. MICRODERMABRASION

My PMD Personal Microderm uses small discs with aluminum oxide crystals on it to exfoliate the skin. It's a spa treatment at home and that definitely reflects the price, but you get what you pay for! I found it very helpful.

4. FACIAL SCRUB

For those who want a much cheaper option, St. Ives' scrub is great for exfoliating. It leaves my skin soft and supple after and isn't too drying! But remember, exfoliating with active acne can be painful and irritating, so it's best to avoid those areas when doing so.

5. MAKEUP

Lastly, the makeup. This is the most experimental and easily my most fun tip because it involves turning yourself into an ogreous monster for a split second. The theory of the "Shrek method" claims that opposing colors on the color wheel cancel each other out, meaning that green is the perfect companion for red, as it neutralizes it down. Fab. Of course makeup-wise this is something you’re going to want to do pre-foundation. I always have a good chuckle when I look like an ogre with all this green concealer on my face, but hey, a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do right

Makeup forever's Step 1 primer is great for those just battling general redness on the face and can be used with or without makeup as it sinks right into the skin. For those who need a little more coverage for their dark spots, opt for NYX's concealer jar in green. The consistency is thicker and does a great job at neutralizing the redness in the skin. Use it under a full coverage foundation/concealer duo and you're gold!
