Do's and Don'ts if you Have Acne April 07 2017, 1 Comment
Having acne scars can be tough to deal with. You’re dealing with insecurities of how you look. You are dealing with regret of past decisions made, that can sometimes feel permanent. You are trying to navigate the waters of plastic surgeons, dermatologists, online forums trying to find a solution for your supposed flaws. Sometimes you wonder if anyone else notices them. Sometimes you wonder if they will ever be gone. And sometimes you wonder if it’s all in your head. Under some lighting, you can’t see them, and in others, you can from a person looking in, they look puzzled at you spending all this money, time and effort striving for better skin. If you are navigating these waters of skincare, I want to share some insights I’ve discovered on my skincare journey:
- DON’T Freak out about your skin and its results
There is a fine line between being proactive about your appearance and having a neurosis about how you look. Having a consistent skin care routine can lead to a slippery slope of obsession. I know that you are spending a lot of time on yourself, so it can be frustrating when you don’t get the results that you want. Or if you want instant results it can be unsatisfying to not have them disappear overnight. But by overdoing your methods it can create the opposite effect and make it worse.
- DON’T Hide Your Flaws
It can sometimes feel like everybody is staring at your acne scars. You may feel motivated to hide them by using primer, concealer, and foundation. There are a ton of products out there that solve these problems like a green primer to lessen the redness, pimple destroying concealer sticks to vaporize and hide at the same time. These products are great don't get me wrong. You shouldn’t feel shame in wanting to hide them. We don’t want to be defined by our bad skin all the time. But by showing the world your authentic face you might start to realize that the thing that you had on your face wasn’t so bad at all. You may start to not have so much shame in not having perfect skin because you realize that people will love you no matter what. And if they don’t, then maybe you don’t want them in your life after all. Just think of the time you can save not having to wash all that pore-clogging stuff off and then you can focus on other things. But like I said I know we all have those big days like a client meeting or a photo shoot, but by showing the world your imperfect face maybe we can realize we’re all perfectly imperfect.
- DON’T Forget Your Sunscreen
It can be annoying having to think about sun protection all the time. But it can be crucial for someone with acne scars. This is because UVA/UVB rays can get rid of collagen in your face, making the marks in your face more pronounced. It can also lead to discolouration changing the pigment of your scars. A lot of people swear by tanning as a method as to solving pimples, which it can but then it can turn them into scars. There are plenty of options out there for people who hate sunscreen but need the protection. There are natural products that have SPF, there is tinted moisturizer with SPF, and there is even makeup with SPF in it. If you absolutely hate sunscreen, maybe try wearing wide-brimmed hats or even scarfs.
- DON’T PICK
For the love of god if you have active acne please stop touching your face. It can feel therapeutic in the moment, but you are creating problems for yourself down the road. If you can’t help it, you may have to equip yourself with a personal toolkit to keep you from picking and probing. Maybe a relaxation technique to keep your mind off of your skin. Or a breathing exercise to keep you stressed free. Or a keeping a guided meditation app on your phone so when you are having a weak moment you can prevent yourself from picking.
- DON’t Give up
This is more just general advice than a specific skin care tip, but sometimes you feel like giving. It takes a lot of trial and error to find a method that works for you, so just because you haven’t found it doesn't mean the next thing will necessarily work for you. Also just because you haven’t necessarily fixed your acne scars 100% doesn’t mean your skin’s whole entire appearance isn’t getting better. Pat yourself on the back for taking the time to learn how your skin works. You are taking the time to learn the connection between your health, body and mind and you should be proud. Don’t keep fighting to find the method that works for you.
- DO – Love yourself and all of your flaws
Remember not to get caught up too much in your insecurities. We are told all the time to be flaw-flee or there will be consequences. No one will touch us, kiss us, and love us unless we are perfect. Just remember that this isn’t completely true, and most people will love you no matter what you look like. Having perfect skin does not completely define who you are. We are dynamic complex individuals who have way more potential than just what we look like. Just remember that we are all perfectly imperfect
- Do – De-stress
Taking the necessary steps and making time to de-stress is crucial in your skincare journey. Just taking the time to remind yourself of all the great things in your life, to be present and mindful can help you fight cortisol and all those acne inducing hormones.
