Common Skincare Mistakes July 22 2016, 0 Comments
Unless you’ve earned a degree in skincare, chances are you don’t know it all when it comes to taking proper care of your skin. These are some skincare mistakes that I’ve made and would advise all of you not to do the same. These are very common mistakes to make and you don’t want to be the victim of them.
Overly Aggressive Acne Treatments
When I first started getting breakouts, which was freshman year of high school, I completely flipped out. I went aggressive with the acne treatments, which made my acne worse. I went to the nearby drugstore and bought every product in sight that read “acne….” We have to be calm when our skin acts up. Especially if you have mature skin, which tends to be drier, be careful not to overly dry your skin. Instead of an antibacterial acne wash, as it can severely dry out skin; try a gentle cleanser with a little salicylic acid. Don’t wash your face, or apply products more than twice a day, as that can dry out the skin. Some ingredients to avoid are benzoyl peroxide and tretinoin. Most people’s skins can’t handle it. One time, I bought a set of acne products that all contained a high percentage of benzoyl peroxide. My face most literally peeled off!!!
Of course, I was one of those girls that wanted a perfect, bronzed tan in the summer time. I had the misperception, just like many others still do, that SPF would prevent getting tan. That statement is not true at all. SPF does not prevent getting tan, but it prevents from getting BURNT. It prevents skin cancer and pre- mature aging. I still regret going out tanning every single day last summer. My sun- spots and moles are still on my skin, and won’t go away anytime soon. SPF is extremely important. Don’t neglect it anywhere, not even on your scalp!
Picking at Breakouts
We're ALL guilty of making this no-brainer of a mistake. But, hey, it happens! One of the key things I always get nagged on when I rarely visit my esthetician is to not pick at my breakouts! It has resulted in moderate scarring, which is why I am visiting this sight today. Picking acne also significantly increases scarring risk. Instead of picking, apply an acne treatment and be patient. My personal favorite is Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion. It is within an affordable price range, is not “drying” as it claims, and is proved to be super effective (you know it is when Kylie Jenner and Ashley Benson use it too).
