In my experience with acne, I have tried many different things to improve my skin. Most of the time, they proved ineffective and only worsen the breakouts. Here is a list of the things that I think are most important when battling with your acne situation.
1. Know Your Skin Type
First of all, it is important to know what type of skin you have. Otherwise, if you use products that work best for a specific skin type, your skin condition will only get worse. So before looking through hundreds of different skincare products, narrow it down to normal, dry, oily, combination or sensitive skin.
2. Back to Basics
The best and most basic skincare routine is comprised of a good cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. It should be used twice a day - every morning and evening. This can be found as a specific 3 -step system from one skincare brand or you could mix and match from different brands. It all depends on what suits you best and benefits your skin the most.
3. Exfoliate Weekly
I recommend using an exfoliator once a week. They come in different forms from scrubs, chemical exfoliants, to brushes and the like. Currently, I am using the Vitamin C Microdermabrasion exfoliator from the Body Shop. It has a wonderful citrus smell and has tiny exfoliating beads that do the job rather more efficiently.
An enzyme peel is also a great alternative for an exfoliator. Your best option is the Banish Pumpkin Enzyme Masque. You should exfoliate 1 to 2 times per week to have great results. Usually, you should apply an exfoliator after you cleanse and before you tone.
4. Facial Masks
Another must-have in your weekly skin care routine is a facial weekly mask. A great face mask for a blemish prone skin is a clay mask as this helps to draw out impurities. You can get clay masks from most skincare ranges. The one I really love is the Elemis Herbal Repair Lavender mask. You can incorporate a face mask into your skin care routine once a week just right after cleansing.
A great tip which everyone would agree is to drink lots of water. You are supposed to drink 8 glasses of water daily. Once you start including it in your daily routine, you will realize how 8 glasses can be easily attained with no sweat. To help myself remember to drink enough, I fill up a liter bottle in the morning and make sure that I drink it all up. Then, by bedtime, I keep it a habit to refill again and finish it all right before I doze off. Drinking lots of water really helps your skin's appearance - making it healthier looking and well-hydrated.
I would also recommend to always wear a face sunscreen because it also helps to protect your skin from the sun's damaging rays. Also, it protects your post acne marks from becoming darker - avoiding further problems after the breakouts.
If you follow these basic skin care tips, you may not have instant results. But as you diligently include the routines, I can guarantee you a positive impact on your overall skincare health in the long run.
