How Eliminating Dairy Cleared My Acne
By: Kate E.
When addressing acne its important to first realize that acne isn’t the problem, it’s a symptom to something not working as efficiently as it could be inside your body. Before my skin started breaking out badly, I decided I wanted to go to a nutritionist because I was feeling tired all the time and had no energy during school. I had a test done by a nutritionist (about a year ago) and found out that I am lactose intolerant, so I really don’t process dairy products well - with lactose being the milk sugar that comes from animal milks. I looked further into this and found out that around 75% of the population is lactose intolerant, whether they know it or not. At first I was shocked by this statistic because almost everyone I knew ate dairy all the time and didn’t seem to be having drastic problems with it, but if I thought about it, it made complete sense. Cows milk, for example, is made for cows – not humans.
We are the only animals on the planet that continues to drink animal milk after infancy and this milk contains hormones and chemicals that are natural to the animals that produce them, but can be harmful for us. I personally believe that the idea “you need dairy to get calcium etc. etc.” is propaganda funded by the huge dairy industry and actually is not true. If you don’t believe me, feel free to do the research for yourself, but this post isn’t about that – it’s about my personal experience and how dairy affected my skin.
The hormones produced by female cows in their milk, has casein in it, which is addictive and is designed to draw the calves back to their mothers for the milk they need to survive in the early stages of their lives. It is also addictive to humans. The hormones in milk are designed to turn a baby calf into an animal weighing a thousand to two thousand pounds within the fifteen months it takes to reach maturity. Thinking about this from any angle – how can this be seen as healthy for our own hormonal balance? Increased insulin and casein hormones added on top of your natural hormones causes oil producing glands to work harder – which obviously clogs pores and causes breakouts.
Apon finding out this information, I started cutting dairy out of my diet almost completely and my skin started to clear almost instantly. I was noticing change every day that I continued to follow this and I was so happy with the results I was seeing. I now use almond and rice milk to cook, to have on cereal or whatever else I would have used cows milk for previously. My hormones are back to normal – now that I’m not effecting them with animal products and although I do have scarring left over it feels great to have had such a simple way to clear the active breakouts. Even if you are not lactose intolerant I would seriously recommend going dairy free because lactose free milk products can still cause acne because of the hormones it contains. Personally, finding out I am lactose intolerant simply lead me to research the topic and find out how bad dairy is for acne. By mentioning lactose intolerances I was simply giving background to my situation and how I came to find out this information, I’m not saying going off dairy will heal acne ONLY for those with intolerances – it can help everyone, so I seriously recommend doing further information on the topic and giving it a try. Good luck! X
