The stigma of male makeup

By: Wafi Habib

Lots of things that were associated with females in years past are now acceptable to be done by a male. This is probably because gender roles are being altered every day in this new ever-changing society. And it is slowly becoming okay for men to wear makeup; no matter what sexuality. However, it wasn’t always like this.

Because society was so close minded, gender roles were very clearly marked out and if one gender didn’t stay within those ‘boundaries’, they would be considered queer. Even when I was growing up, I would be uncomfortable with the idea of a man wearing makeup but that was because society made me think that way. However, I eventually matured and realized that I had no say in who should wear makeup or not.

The way I think about it is, since there is such a huge focus in society on being flawless we should all have the right to do whatever we want to achieve it as long as we now the consequences. And the only safe way of doing this is with makeup. There is so much that makeup can fix that I find it wrong to take that opportunity away from someone. If you wake up with a pimple and prom is just 12 hours away, what can you do? Use a concealer. Are you looking a little oily? That’s okay, that’s why translucent powder was created.

The main point I’m trying to get at is the fact that everyone, no matter what gender, should be able to do anything to their own body to achieve whatever look they want without being judged. And it irritates me when men make fun of other men who put on makeup because in my opinion it’s just as bad as making fun of someone because of what they wear; it’s childish.

Life would be so much easier if we weren’t all so judgmental and if we all just moved on with our own lives without caring about everyone else around us. And if you’re reading this and you’re a man who is against other men wearing makeup: get up, get a life and get over it. And if you’re a man who wears makeup: live your life and do whatever you want to do for you and don’t care about what anyone else thinks about you because everyone has an opinion and usually it shouldn’t matter to you.
